Jeffrey M. Lanigan
Welcome to beautiful Rome, New York. The City of Rome has incredible assets that make it a unique and wonderful place to live, work, play, and raise a family. Wonderful schools, safe streets, a great labor force, countless outdoor recreational activities, amazing arts and entertainment events, and an abundance of historical treasures can all be found here. The quality of life in Rome is unmatched, offering magnificent opportunities for continued growth and prosperity.
Jeffrey M. Lanigan became Mayor of the City of Rome on January 1, 2024. A lifelong Rome resident, he began his career in public safety with the Village of Vernon before joining the Rome Police Department (RPD). During his tenure with the RPD, Mayor Lanigan rose to the rank of detective and served in several specialized roles, including the Special Response Team (SRT), Community Impact Unit (CIU) and Honor Guard. From 2017 to 2020, he was the department’s Public Information Officer, serving as the primary liaison between law enforcement and the media. His service earned numerous commendations, including the prestigious New York State Senate Liberty Medal, awarded in 2019 by Senator Joseph Griffo for his heroic role in saving a young boy from choking. He also served as President of the 76-member Philip S. McDonald Police Benevolent Association, where he advocated for officers while fostering strong relationships between law enforcement and the community.
Since taking office, Mayor Lanigan has prioritized public safety, economic growth, and quality of life initiatives. Under his leadership, the City established a Community Court program designed to address city code violations with a focus on connecting individuals with resources such as substance abuse treatment, mental health support, and social services—creating a more effective and community-centered approach to justice. He also strengthened public safety operations by restoring a K-9 unit within the police department and establishing a safe trails team which includes members from both fire and police.
Mayor Lanigan has guided Rome through significant challenges, most notably leading the City’s response and recovery following the devastating 2024 tornado. His administration worked with local, state, and federal partners to ensure public safety, stabilize neighborhoods, and implement a long-term recovery strategy.
In economic development, Mayor Lanigan has helped secure transformative investment that is reshaping the City’s future. Most notably, Rome was selected by Chobani as the site for a major new food production facility—a project expected to bring significant private investment and create more than 1,000 jobs. In addition, Rome was awarded a second $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) grant—making it the first community in New York State to receive a second award. This historic achievement underscores the City’s continued momentum and commitment to revitalizing its downtown and waterfront corridors.
Additional accomplishments include advancing strategic redevelopment projects, strengthening partnerships with regional and state leaders, supporting workforce and business growth, and enhancing transparency and responsiveness in city government.
Mayor Lanigan remains committed to building a stronger, more vibrant Rome—one that honors its history while embracing innovation and opportunity for all residents.
